Spanish 1a Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Spanish 1a is a course design to focus on the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries. The Students will learn to use basic vocabulary for topics (e.g., greetings, numbers, foods, hobbies, weather, school). This course will expand the use of the target language to obtain and provide useful information on people, places, and things. Students will also learn to use basic vocabulary, gestures, and oral expressions for greetings, introductions, farewells, and other common interactions.

Text Book: Avancemos 1a

COURSE GOALS
1. To develop basic grammar exercises and evaluative feedback.
2. To new situations and contexts.
3. To use authentic language wherever possible.
4. To use written and spoken language at a novice low pace for formal and informal exchanges.
5. To recognize the culture of target language-related ethnic groups.

ATTENDANCE
 When you are absent you are responsible for obtaining any handouts /notes or assignments for that class session. Since we will be so heavily involved in peer group work your regular attendance and participation are central to the success of the course.

POLICY ON LATE WORK 
10 points off for each day late

GRADING
1. Student work will be graded and evaluated
2. Students will be graded of class participation/performance
3. Students will receive timely feedback
4. I'll use a numerical grading scale

                  A=     93 or above   
            B=    85%  to   92%
                  C=    75% to    84%          
                  D=70% to 74%
                  F=69% or below


5.  Any exceptions on late assignments would require either prior arrangement or written documentation, as is the case with excused absences
6. Plagiarism-- is not acceptable, will result on an F
7. Cheating -- will result on a grade of an F

Grading scale
The grading scale will be broken into two separate categories; formative and summative. These will then be broken into sub-categories for the different types of assignments.
Formative: 80%
          Participation
          Homework/Class work
          Quizzes
Summative: 20%
          Exams/Tests
          Projects

Subject pronouns and ser; gustar with an infinitive; definite and indefinite articles; noun/adjective agreement
Unidad 2         Vocabulary
Daily schedules; telling time; numbers from 11-100; describing classes, locations and feelings.
Grammar
Verb tener; present tense of –ar verbs; verb estar; verb ir.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1.    Pen/Pencil
2.    Pencil sharpener                         
3.    Notebook with two sections (spiral or 3 ring)
4.    eraser
5.    Spanish-English Dictionary
6.    Color pencils
7.    Thumb drive

TUTORING
Tutoring is offered after school as needed or for enrichment.
